…Picks Yusuf, Tinubu as guber, presidential candidates

In what observers describe as an unprecedented early consolidation of political interests ahead of a general election cycle, stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State have adopted a consensus arrangement, endorsing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as sole candidates for the 2027 governorship and presidential elections respectively.

The coordinated endorsements, announced during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House, signal a strategic shift in the party’s internal dynamics, with leaders opting to close ranks unusually early—nearly a year ahead of the typical pre-election build-up.

Details of the decisions were contained in separate statements issued Friday by Mustapha Muhammad, Chief Press Secretary to the Kano State Governor, said the move reflects “collective resolve, unity, and confidence in tested leadership.”

In a symbolic and politically significant gesture, APC stakeholders in the state went further by purchasing the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms for Governor Yusuf, effectively removing any ambiguity about the party’s gubernatorial ticket in Kano.

Presenting the forms, former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, described the action as a fulfilment of a prior agreement among party leaders to adopt Yusuf as a consensus candidate.

“We have already agreed that you are our sole governorship candidate, and in order to actualise that promise, I hereby hand over these two important forms to you — the expression of interest form and the nomination form — to be duly completed and submitted,” Ganduje said.

Political analysts say such early endorsement is rare in Kano’s historically competitive political environment, where party primaries are often fiercely contested and influenced by shifting alliances. The development suggests a deliberate attempt by the APC to avoid internal fractures that had, in past elections, weakened its electoral prospects in the state.

Stakeholders at the meeting noted that the decision was driven by a desire to sustain what they described as developmental strides recorded under Yusuf’s administration, while also preserving party cohesion.

“The purchase of the forms is not just procedural; it is symbolic of unity and continuity,” one party leader at the meeting said. “We want to avoid distractions and focus on governance and strategic positioning.”

Governor Yusuf, in his response, expressed appreciation for the show of confidence, pledging to deepen inclusive governance and sustain policies aimed at improving the welfare of residents.

“I am humbled by this gesture and the trust reposed in me. I remain committed to serving the people of Kano State with dedication, fairness, and vision,” he said.

In a parallel decision that underscores Kano’s importance in national politics, APC stakeholders also unanimously adopted President Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

The motion for Tinubu’s adoption was moved by Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi and received overwhelming support from attendees, effectively sealing the president’s backing from one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states.

Speaking at the meeting, Kano APC Chairman, Umar Haruna Doguwa, revealed that the state chapter had initially planned to fully fund the president’s nomination forms but later agreed on a collective financial contribution.

“We have agreed to contribute the sum of N50 million towards the purchase of the expression of interest and nomination forms for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Doguwa said.

The financial commitment, according to party insiders, is both a demonstration of loyalty and a strategic investment in maintaining Kano’s relevance within the APC’s national power structure.

Observers note that Kano, with its large voting population, has historically played a decisive role in presidential elections. The early endorsement of Tinubu is therefore seen as a calculated move to consolidate support and send a strong signal to other state chapters.

Stakeholders at the meeting emphasised that their decisions were anchored on confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and ongoing reforms, as well as a shared determination to secure electoral victory for the APC in 2027.

“The endorsement reflects our belief in continuity and the need to sustain the current reform agenda at the federal level,” another stakeholder noted.

The meeting also reaffirmed the earlier endorsement of Governor Yusuf, highlighting a coordinated strategy to align both state and national political interests under a unified framework.

Political commentators say the dual endorsement could reshape the internal dynamics of the APC, potentially discouraging dissenting aspirants while strengthening the party’s negotiating power ahead of the elections.

However, some analysts caution that early consensus arrangements, while useful for party unity, may also limit internal democracy if not carefully managed.

“This is a bold and strategic move, but the party must ensure inclusiveness to prevent disaffection among stakeholders who may feel sidelined,” a Kano-based political analyst said.

Despite such concerns, the Kano APC leadership appears confident that the consensus model will enhance stability, reduce intra-party conflicts, and position the party for electoral success.

The Kano State Government, in its statement, commended stakeholders for their “unwavering support and commitment to unity,” urging party members to remain aligned with the broader goal of advancing development and prosperity in the state.

As the 2027 election gradually comes into view, Kano’s early political alignment may serve as a template—or a test case—for other states navigating the delicate balance between consensus and competition within Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
