Why INEC declared Bauchi governorship election inconclusive

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the early hours of Monday declared the governorship election in Bauchi State inconclusive.

Mohammed Kyari, returning officer for the Bauchi governorship election who made the declaration at the Independent National Electoral Commission Bauchi State office explained that the margin of 4,059 votes between the two leading parties, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was less than 45,312 which was the number of cancelled votes after results from 19 out of the 20 local government areas were collated.

Kyari stated that based on section 26 part 53 of the Electoral Act, supplementary elections would be held within 21 days in areas where elections were not held before a winner would be announced.

The results collated showed that the PDP candidate, Bala Mohammed scored the highest number of votes amounting to 469,512 while the APC candidate, Governor Mohammed Abubakar closely followed with 465,453 votes.

The returning officer earlier rejected the results from Tafawa Balewa local government area, believed to be a stronghold of PDP following reports of violence and disruption of collation of results at collation centres.
