Yobe State Government in collaboration with the Biomedical Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) have launched a community-based kidney disease research project.
The study led by researchers of diverse backgrounds from the iomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC), was aimed at tackling the prevalence of kidney disease in the state, particularly around the river Yobe.
This was contained in a statement issued by Ibrahim Baba Saleh, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) Media and Public Engagement to the journalists in Damaturu yesterday.
Governor Mai Mala Buni, in an interaction with BioRTC’s visiting scholars a few months ago urged them to deepen their research on the causes of kidney diseases in Gashua, one of the most affected areas, to enable the government to find lasting solutions to problems.
The research project brings together a diverse team of experts, including nephrologists, cardiologists, and environmental specialists, to investigate the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle associations of kidney disease.
The project has garnered support from international partners in the UK, USA, and Ghana, as well as numerous collaborators from within Nigeria.
Dr Muhammad Lawan Gana, the Yobe State Commissioner of Health who was at the virtual meeting with the team yesterday said this global cooperation underscores the project’s significance and potential for far-reaching impact.
The BioRTC Director and Special Adviser to H.E on Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Mahmoud Bukar has announced that fieldwork is set to commence in Gashua in the first week of February, with the research team collecting samples to gain valuable insights into the prevalence and causes of kidney disease in the region.
According to previous studies, kidney disease in Yobe State is linked to various factors, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and environmental factors such as limited access to clean water and sanitation.
The Yobe State Government’s commitment to addressing kidney disease demonstrates its dedication to improving the health and well-being of its citizens.
