Why Senate opposition caucus is not confrontational – Minority Leader

Senate

Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), the minority leader of the Senate, has explained his approach to opposition in the 10th Senate, emphasising that constructive engagement with those in power is more effective than outright confrontation.

Speaking in his office on Friday while addressing journalists covering the Senate, Moro stated that the “Collaborative Leadership for Good Governance” award given to him by the Senate Press Corps affirmed his leadership style as a minority leader.

“For me, minority leadership is not about confrontation but about engaging constructively with those in the ruling party to promote good governance for Nigerians,” he said.

He further highlighted the importance of collaboration in leadership, stating, “I believe in teamwork and dialogue. Compromise, when done right, is a vital tool for achieving progress in governance. The role of the opposition is not just to challenge authority but to persuade decision-makers to act in the best interest of the people.”

While acknowledging that he was elected under the PDP platform, Moro noted that his primary responsibility is to serve Nigeria as a whole.

“As a senator of the Federal Republic, I must work with fellow Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliations, to advance national interests,” he said.

He also recalled a discussion with a fellow minority senator who urged him to adopt a more aggressive stance in the Senate. Moro argued that past confrontational efforts, such as attempts to impeach the president in previous assemblies, did not yield results.

“In both the 8th and 9th Senate, several motions and points of order were raised to address national concerns, including calls for the impeachment of the then-president. But was he impe itached? The answer is no. If certain actions are unlikely to produce tangible results, then it is unwise to pursue them,” he explained.

The senator reaffirmed his belief in a pragmatic approach to leadership, emphasizing that his goal is to promote governance strategies that are both realistic and beneficial to Nigerians.
