Former Senate President, David Mark, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Lt. General Jeremiah Useni, describing him as “a hero,” “a distinguished officer and gentleman of all seasons.”
Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), passed away on Thursday at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness.
His death was confirmed in a statement by Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

Reacting to Useni’s demise in Abuja, Mark said, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of General Useni. My heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, colleagues, the government, and the people of Plateau State, as well as the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“General Useni was a gallant soldier and a pragmatic politician who served the nation with honour and dignity.”
Mark further described Useni as a successful military officer and a vibrant politician who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria.
“His selfless service, bravery, and leadership will forever be remembered and honoured,” he added.
Useni served as the military governor of the old Bendel State under General Muhammadu Buhari in 1984. He later became the Minister of Transport and subsequently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Mark also recalled Useni’s significant contributions to the development of the FCT, noting that he was one of the leaders who laid its foundational structures.
The former Senate President prayed for Useni’s legacy to inspire future generations and asked God to grant the deceased eternal rest.
