Folasade Ogunsola, the vice chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka has approved the appointment of Sunday Oloruntola as the new head of the Department of Mass Communication.
This is made known in a letter signed by Olakunle Makinde, the acting registrar of the University of Lagos dated July 26, which was made available to BusinessDay.
“I am pleased to inform you that the vice chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola has approved your appointment as head, the Department of Mass Communication for three years with effect from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2027,” the statement reads.
Oloruntola is a professor of journalism and also the chairman of the board of trustees of the Media Career Development Network (MCDN), a member of the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. (AEJMC), and International Association of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR).
He acted as the assistant head of the department from August 2016 to July 2017, before taking over from Adepoju Tejumade, whose tenure expired on July 31, 2024.
Oloruntola obtained his first degree and master’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos and a Doctorate in Agricultural Communication from the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
He recently completed his sabbatical at Augustine University, Ilara-Epe as head of mass communication of the Department of Mass Communication and Media Studies which under his headship was fully accredited by the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) along with 12 other departments.
His media work experience includes working as a reporter at the News Agency of Nigeria, a features writer at The Republic, a business reporter at Citizen Magazine; and a senior production sub-editor at Daily Times Newspaper.
