The United Kingdom has announced stringent security measures, including temporary airspace restrictions, in anticipation of President Bola Tinubu’s state visit next week.
Thames Valley Police confirmed that the enhanced security arrangements are part of a coordinated operation involving the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household, and other security partners.
The measures aim to safeguard dignitaries, spectators, and the general public during the high-profile visit.
Adrian Hall, Chief Superintendent  of Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Unit explained on Wednesday that the airspace restrictions are just one element of security strategy.
“The air restrictions are just one part of our robust security operation for the state visit of Nigerian President Tinubu next week, with many measures you will see and others you will not,” Hall said.
He added that Thames Valley Police have extensive experience in managing royal events in Windsor and that meticulous planning has gone into the upcoming visit.
“We will ensure everyone attending the state visit, including dignitaries and spectators, as well as the public, are kept safe to enjoy the historic occasion,” Hall said.
According to him, Windsor Castle already maintains permanent airspace restrictions year-round, but these will be extended on Wednesday, March 18, to cover the duration of Tinubu’s visit.
“The temporary restriction will run from 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. and is enforced in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)”, he added.
Hall warned that violations would be treated as criminal offences under the Air Navigation Order.
“We will be taking a strong stance in enforcing the restrictions; anyone who breaches them will be committing a criminal offence and could be arrested,” he said.
Hall further noted that the security operation will also see a significant police presence on the ground, including search teams, the Mounted Section, Roads Policing units, and armed officers.
“Officers from neighbourhood policing teams and Project Servator, which specialises in counter-terrorism and public reassurance, will engage directly with the public”, he. Stated.
Authorities confirmed that additional protective measures would include Windsor’s extensive CCTV network, hostile vehicle mitigation barriers, and other security infrastructure to ensure the visit proceeds safely.
Police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
“The public plays a critical role to support us, so we encourage them to report anything unusual by calling 101 or speaking to one of our officers. If there is an immediate threat or emergency, then call 999,” Hall said.
