UI medical students protest power outage at UCH Ibadan

UI medical students protest power outage at UCH Ibadan

Medical students from the University of Ibadan (UI) on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest over power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

The students expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation at the hospital in which the teaching hospital had no light in last the 82 days.

UCH where the medical students from UI are trained has been experiencing a power outage for over a year due to debts owed the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) by the first Nigeria’s teaching hospital.

This prompted the electricity distribution company to cut off power supply to the hospital in March 2024 due to unpaid electricity bills.

IBEDC had earlier disconnected the teaching hospital’’s power supply in November 2023 for the same reason.

Bolaji Aweda, President of the Students’ Union, who spoke to Journalists during the procession, stated that students of the institution were directly affected.

He said, “For past 82 days, now, there was no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.

“So we are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected. Then IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power,”.
