Top 10 jobs in Canada for Nigerians, others without experience

Canada deepens effort to hire more workers from Nigeria, others

Labour shortages in Canada as a result of its aging population and lower birth rate, has increased its demand for skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled jobs from other countries including Nigeria.

The number of Canadian job openings with “without experience” descriptors in their occupational eligibility requirements has risen in response to the rise in demand for unskilled labour, according to Universal Adviser Migration Services, an immigration consultancy firm in India.

“Workers without experience now have the chance to fulfill their Canadian work-life aspirations thanks to Canada’s increase of employment options that address the nation’s labour shortages,” it said.

The Canadian federal government in 2022 announced an aggressive plan to take in 500,000 immigrants a year by 2025, with almost 1.5 million new immigrants coming to the country over the next three years.

Data from US Census Bureau International Data Base, a global demographic product, show that the estimated working age (15-64) for Canada is projected to rise marginally by 4.9 percent to 25.8 million by 2050 from 24.6 million in 2022, while that of Nigeria will double by 107.4 percent to 259.9 million.

Last year, the country landed 437,120 Permanent Residents (PRs), a nearly eight percent increase from the total number of PRs in 2021.

In the first half of 2023, the number of Nigerians moving to Canada surged to the highest in nine years. Data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada shows that it recorded 10,180 PRs from Nigeria in H1, a marginal increase of 0.74 percent from 10,105 in the same period of 2022.

“Finding jobs in the country targeting workers with little to no experience can seem daunting. Still, this list of the top 10 jobs in Canada for foreigners without experience should point you in the right direction,” said immigration consultants at Canadian visa.org.

They added that the most of the jobs can be found in job searching sites such as LinkedIn, Indeed and Canadian Job Bank.

Here are the top five jobs without experience and their average annual salaries:

Cashier (CAD$ 27,787.5)

Cashiers are needed in retail stores and supermarkets without prior experience.

“As a cashier, you would handle transactions, assist customers, and maintain the cash register. This position requires good customer service skills and attention to detail,” said Canadian visa.org

According to Canada Job Bank, they are mostly needed in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. “The annual wage for Cashiers in Canada is CAD$ 27,787.5.”

Caregiver (CAD$ 35,100)

Canada’s aging population is increasing the demand for caregivers, people who provide direct care for children, elderly people, or the chronically ill.

According to the Canada Job Bank, caregiver jobs are mostly demanded in Manitoba and Ontario and their annual wage is CAD $35,100.

“As a caregiver, you would assist elderly or disabled individuals in their homes. Although formal education is not mandatory, having relevant certifications and training can increase your chances of landing a job in this field,” immigration consultants at Canadian visa.org, say

Kitchen helper (CAD$ 28,470)

Kitchen helpers help to assist chefs and cooks in preparing, cleaning and maintaining kitchen areas. They are most in demand in Manitoba and Nova Scotia, according to Canadian visa.org.

“This entry-level position allows you to gain valuable experience and learn about different cuisines,” it said.

The annual wage for kitchen helpers in Canada is CAD $28,470, according to the Canada Job Bank.

Packaging (CAD$ 29,250)

People that do packaging jobs are known as packers. It involves preparing finished products for packaging and shipment. They are available in various industries, including manufacturing and distribution.

These positions involve preparing products for shipment and ensuring they are properly packaged and labeled, according to Canadian visa.org. “Attention to detail and efficiency are key skills for this role.”

Consultants at Canada Job Bank, say the jobs which are needed in Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, and Yukon Territory earn an annual wage of CAD$ 29,250.

Dishwasher (CAD$ 28,470)

Apart from kitchen cleaners, dishwashers are also needed in restaurants and cafeterias across Canada.

Canadian visa.org, said the job requires minimal experience and provides an opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment. “While it may not be the most glamorous position, it can serve as a stepping stone toward better opportunities in the culinary industry.”

Dishwasher jobs are most in demand in Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island and Manitoba earning an average annual salary of CAD$ 28,470.

Other jobs are driver residential (CAD$ 46,800), seasonal nursery workers (CAD$ 33,150), exhibit cleaner (CAD$ 35,100), general laborers (CAD$ 50,700) and room attendant (CAD$ 35,100).
