The Czech Republic hunts tech experts from Nigeria, others to fill talent gap

The Czech Republic has a lot of open jobs, particularly in tech, but not enough qualified people to fill them.

To address this, the government has begun a new search for foreign talents with the launch of a portal called ‘Work in Czechia’.

The new portal was created to attract technology experts into the country’s workforce from countries with a prospering tech ecosystem like Nigeria’s and fill its labour gaps.

“When you know the date from which your visa is valid, you can choose the way how to travel to the Czech Republic. Most of the time it’s a plane but we have relocated even some camping cars, too! So, it’s enough to book your flight ticket for an appropriate time and date and everything will be taken care of. And again, you don’t spend a penny,” the website, workinczechia.tech wrote.

Czechia has been battling labour shortages for a long time. According to a survey from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), labour shortages have prompted Czech employers to look for workers from other countries.

The number of foreign workers in the country increased by nearly 30,700 in 2023 alone, reaching more than 823,900 by December, or 2.5 times more compared to the statistics from the end of 2015; Of whom just under 409,800 were from EU countries, as shown by statistics from the Labour Office.

The new visa sponsorship portal is part of Czechia’s response to the problem and places them among European countries already seeking to attract professionals in technological fields, according to Schenghen.news.

In 2022, the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT) introduced the Deep Tech Talent Initiative to upskill one million people in deep tech fields by 2025.

The initiative was an answer to the talent shortage ravaging many European countries by creating a strong tech talent pool across Europe.

“The website Workinczechia.EU provides foreign talents with a comprehensive overview of life and employment in our country…from details on visas and immigration to tips on cultural activities.” said Jan Michal, the CEO of the CzechInvest agency.
