Teachers gear up for Maltina Award 2022

This year’s edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition is already generating waves among teachers across the country as hopes are high for winning the top prizes of the competition.

Entries for the competition, which is open to all secondary school teachers in Nigeria, both in public and private secondary schools, have commenced submission of entries as announced by Nigerian Breweries Plc on Thursday, May 26.

Uaboi Agbebaku, the Nigerian Breweries secretary legal director who announced the kick-off, disclosed that the initiative had yielded a tremendous impact on teachers and the teaching profession as well as Nigeria’s education sector generally.

The 2022 competition which is its 8th edition has a total of N6.5m for the overall winner just as it applied to previous winners, and in addition, is a plaque with a certificate.

While the grand winner would go home with a sum of N1 million as a national champion and another N500,000 as a state champion on the day of the award ceremony in October where he or she would be unveiled, the person would also be paid N1 million yearly for the next five years provided he or she remains a teacher.

The top winner is also exposed to capacity development training while his/her school gets a fully equipped block of classrooms or computer laboratory.

Nigerian Breweries Plc, (NB Plc), producers of the Maltina drink brand, sponsors the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award, as one of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

The initiative is supported by the federal ministry of education and other stakeholders in education including the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS), and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

Nigerian Breweries as a pointer to its commitment to improving education in Nigeria, set up the Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund in 1994 with a start-up capital of 100 million naira to enable sustain quality education through structured intervention in the sector.

The fund has constructed and furnished over 400 classrooms, sanitary facilities, and libraries in 74 communities across the country. NB Plc has also granted scholarships to deserving students in tertiary institutions.

Since 2015 when the competition was introduced it has recognised a total of 118 teachers. Past op national winners are Rose Nkemdilim Obi, a Mathematics and Chemistry teacher at Federal Government Girls’ College, Onitsha (2015); Imoh Essien, a teaches at the Special Education Center for Exceptional Children, Uyo (2016); Ariguzo Udochukwu, a seasoned registered educator and administrator (2017); Olasunkanmi, a teacher with Government Day Secondary School Karu, Abuja (2018); Ezem Collins, a teacher at the Royal Family Academy, Abuja (2019) and Oluwabunmi Ahoefa Anani, a teacher with Concordia College Yola-2020, and Abanika Taiye, a Design and Technology/Basic Technology/Technical Drawing teacher at James Hope College, Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria (2021).

So who will be crowned Maltina teacher of the Year 2022?
