Senate to Pass 2020 budget Thursday, as report on appropriation bill laid

COVID19: Senate wants 2020 budget downsized

The report of the Senate committee on appropriation on the 2020 budget was on Wednesday laid in the Upper Chamber as Senators would debate on the report and subsequently pass the budget on Thursday.

The report was previously scheduled to be presented last week but the committee chairman said it was not achievable due to technical hitches and further requested the Senate to give it one week to lay it.

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan had assured that as soon as the report of the 2020 budget was laid in Senate, the lawmakers would debate it and pass it immediately.

The MDAs have since defended their budgets and the Senate sub-committees have also rounded off their budget defence before the Senate standing committee on appropriation hence the report is laid.

In plenary on Wednesday, chairman of the Senate committee on appropriation, Senator Barau Jibrin (Kano North) moved a motion for the Senate to receive the report.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan granted the request and the report was laid before the Senators.

President Muhammadu Buhari presented N10.33 trillion 2020 budget before a joint session of the National Assembly.

Before the NASS succeeded in ensuring that ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) defended their budgets, it had forcefully adjourned for two consecutive times to pave the way.

Senate President Lawan had explained that the adjournment was to hasten the passage of the 2020 budget and ensure revert to January-December budget cycle.
