Tragedy struck in Niger State Saturday as a petrol tanker exploded at Dikko junction in Gurara Local Government Area, leaving many dead and properties destroyed.
Eyewitnesses said the tanker was travelling from Lagos to a northern state when it overturned while attempting to maneuver a bad spot on the road. On impact with the ground, the tanker was said to have spilled its contents and sparked leading to an inferno which consumed nearby vehicles, motorcycles and shops rapidly.
Many people were burnt to death, while others sustained severe injuries, witnesses said.
The exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, but reports suggest that more than 50 people lost their lives in the disaster.

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has expressed shock and sadness over the incident, describing it as “worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate.”
The governor directed all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to take necessary actions and has urged security agents to ensure safety in the area. The governor has also cautioned residents to prioritize their safety.
