The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has, again, condemned the Federal Government’s programme of releasing ‘repentant’ Boko Haram terrorists, stating that it directly contributes to the rise in violent attacks across north-eastern Nigeria.
The group insists that the release of these detainees instead of prosecuting them under anti-terrorism laws is aggravating the insurgency, emboldening terrorists, and destabilising the region.
Emmanuel Onwubiko, national coordinator, HURIWA, in a statement on Tuesday, warned that the practice of freeing Boko Haram militants after their so-called deradicalisation and reintegration only increases the threat posed by the terrorist group.
The group emphasised that this policy violates the nation’s legal framework for handling terrorism and is counterproductive to efforts aimed at securing peace.
“We have consistently opposed this unconstitutional and immoral practice of releasing detained terrorists without holding them accountable for their heinous crimes.
“Instead of reintegrating them into society, they should face prosecution and be sentenced for their crimes against humanity”, Onwubiko stated.
HURIWA’s position follows the deadly attack on Monday by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP militants, who killed 40 farmers in the Dumba community, near Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State.
The group further highlighted the military’s tragic loss of six soldiers in another attack on Sunday, when insurgents ambushed troops returning to their base in Borno State, resulting in the deaths of over 30 militants.
The rights group condemned the murders of innocent farmers and soldiers as “absolutely intolerable,” calling for stronger measures to protect civilians and military personnel from the escalating violence.
HURIWA urged the Federal Government to halt the practice of releasing Boko Haram terrorists and focus on prosecuting them to prevent further bloodshed.
In addition to demanding legal accountability for released militants, HURIWA called for financial compensation for the families of victims of recent attacks.
The group stressed that the Nigerian government must uphold its primary responsibility of safeguarding citizens’ lives and securing the nation’s future.
