Protesters block major road leading to Abuja over hardship

kaduna

Scores of protesters on Monday blocked Kaduna Road, a highway in Niger State linking Kaduna to Abuja. Many of the protesters expressed frustration with the state of affairs and the high cost of living in the country.

They also want a solution to the spate of insecurity, and killings. According to Premium Times, the protesters carried placards with several inscriptions such as ‘We Are Not Slaves’, ‘Enough is Enough’; ‘Stop Anti-Masses Policies’, ‘Hardship Is Unbearable’ and ‘Fuel Subsidy Must Be Back.’

This is coming few days before the planned nationwide protest across the country; many groups who had signified interest in joining the protest say they want a reduction in the price of foodstuff, and goods and a reversal of some government policies, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies by President Bola Tinubu.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country is presently facing its worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.

Inflation is at an all-time high and many Nigerians are finding it increasingly difficult to feed. Food prices more than doubled after President Bola Tinubu removed petrol subsidies and floated the naira to allow market forces to determine the value of the Nigerian currency.

However, the Tinubu-led government has begged for more time from Nigerians, saying some of the implemented policies are necessary to reposition the country and that it was working to alleviate the suffering of citizens.
