Police, UNODC partner to improve public trust in Nigeria Police Force

Police arrest 35,496 suspects, secure 16,200 convictions in one year

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), has launched a training programme to enhance the handling of public complaints.

This initiative brings together police public relations officers and officers from the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) across various states and the Force headquarters in Abuja. The training was designed to boost the capacity of police personnel to manage complaints effectively, ensuring timely responses, and fostering greater public trust in the police.

It covered key aspects such as communication strategies, complaint-handling procedures, and the importance of transparency and accountability in policing.

This was disclosed in a statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force’s public relations officer in Abuja.

Conducted in two batches, the programme brought together police public relations officers and officers from the Complaints Response Unit (CRU) from various states and the Force headquarters.

The primary aim was to enhance the ability of police personnel to manage complaints effectively, ensure timely responses, and improve public trust in the police force.

Key topics covered in the training include communication strategies, complaint-handling procedures, and the importance of transparency and accountability in policing.

Chukwuma Uma Ume, the UNODC national programme officer on anti-corruption: Police oversight and accountability project, praised the police for their commitment to improving complaint management.

He emphasised the significance of such training in promoting a culture of accountability and responsiveness within the police force.

Addressing the officers, Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police, represented by Adejobi, highlighted the crucial role of proactive complaint management in ensuring justice. He urged the officers to prioritise public concerns and act swiftly in addressing complaints.
