The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has demanded an immediate retraction and public apology from Amnesty International (AI) over a recent publication titled “Bloody August: Nigeria Government’s Violent Crackdown on and Bad Governance Protests,” or face legal action.
The demand was conveyed in a letter dated January 6, 2025, and was reiterated in a statement issued on Tuesday by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, NPF public relations officer, force headquarters, Abuja.
According to Adejobi, the report contains unsubstantiated claims accusing the police of human rights violations, police brutality, and excessive violence during the August 2024 End Bad Governance protests.
The force categorically dismissed the allegations as false and baseless, asserting that a thorough review and investigation revealed no evidence to support the claims.
“The Nigeria Police Force acted with restraint and professionalism during the protests, even under severe provocation and violent attacks.

“At all times, officers adhered to global best practices, employing minimal force only where necessary”, the police read.
The NPF further emphasised that national media coverage supports its account, highlighting efforts by the police to maintain law and order while ensuring the safety of peaceful protesters.
Expressing concern over the impact of the report, the Police described the publication as misleading and damaging to the trust and confidence it has worked to build with citizens.
The force noted that such allegations undermine the morale of officers who risk their lives daily to protect the public.
In response, the NPF has given Amnesty International a seven-day ultimatum to issue a formal retraction and public apology.
Failure to comply, the police warned, would leave them with no option but to explore legal actions to defend their reputation.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the NPF assured Nigerians that it remains dedicated to upholding the law and earning the trust of the people it serves.
