Police bust cross border car theft syndicate in Kano

…recover three stolen vehicles

In a major crackdown on vehicle theft, the Kano State Police Command has arrested six suspected members of a cross border car theft syndicate and recovered three stolen vehicles, the Authorities have confirmed.

The operation was carried out by the Command’s Special Intervention Squad (SIS) following intelligence-led and technology-driven directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.

A statement issued by Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, Kano State Police Command’s Spokesperson, on Sunday, noted that the arrest represented a major break through in the fight against organised crimes in the State.

The operation led to the arrest of 35-year-old Aliyu Mamman at Hotoro Ring Road on February 13. A resident of Gusau LGA in Zamfara State, Mamman confessed to stealing vehicles across Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina States.

The confession of the suspect, the statement stated, led investigators to the other syndicate members: Abdulhamid Usman, Saliha Abdulhamid, Auwal Shuaibu, Sani Bala, and Ahmad Mannir—all of whom have been taken into custody.

Three stolen vehicles—a Golf Wagon, an Opel, and a Hijet (Kurkura)—have been recovered. The police praised the Special Intervention Squad for their professionalism and urged residents to remain vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or via the command’s emergency lines.

“The Kano State Police Command remains committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all residents,” said CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Command’s Public Relations Officer. “This operation underscores our continued focus on community-oriented policing and proactive crime prevention.”

The Police operation marks a significant step in curbing organised car theft rings in the region, which have been a persistent concern for vehicle owners and the broader business community.
