Pity as NDDC picks 10,000 out of 3.2m youths for paid internship

NDDC CEO, Samuel Ogbuku

Those murmuring and pushing the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to make haste and release the names of those picked for the internship may never know what it takes to pick 10,000 youths from the 3.2m that registered in the first-ever data base of youths of the oil region.

The fact that the Samuel Ogbuku-led management chose the way of transparency in this exercise is significant, and a big sign that things are being done differently now.

Else, it would have been easy to share the 10,000 to the top men of the Commission and pronto, the list would be ready.

As the wait continues, the management says it appreciates the Niger Delta stakeholders, including the youth, for their unwavering support and understanding as the selection process for the Commission’s transformative Youth Internship Scheme nears completion.

A statement signed by Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Director, Corporate Affairs, said with over 3.2 million young individuals registered in the database at the close of the application period, this unprecedented response highlights the youth’s immense potential and aspirations. “This initiative, designed to empower 10,000 beneficiaries with year-long internships to gain practical skills across various organisations represents a significant step toward sustainable youth empowerment in the region.”

She said the NDDC acknowledges the growing anticipation surrounding the selection process and assured all stakeholders that it was conducted with the utmost transparency, diligence, and fairness. “The Commission remains steadfast in ensuring this life-changing opportunity reaches the most deserving candidates, creating a lasting impact and paving the way for a brighter future.”

Beyond the Youth Internship Scheme, she stated, the NDDC has implemented several innovative programmes aimed at providing opportunities and stability for the youth of the Niger Delta. A key initiative, the Holistic Opportunity Projects of Engagement (HOPE), has established a comprehensive digital repository of vital information, including the qualifications, skills, interests, needs, and employment status of youths in the region.

“This data-driven approach enables the Commission to design targeted programmes that address the unique needs of the vibrant and resourceful youth population.

“To ensure that all initiatives are anchored in transparency and ethical practices, the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a globally renowned consultancy, to enhance its corporate governance framework.

“This collaboration developed a robust Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), streamlining internal processes, promoting accountability, and fostering a strong institutional culture built on sound ethics and good governance.

“The NDDC remains deeply committed to engaging stakeholders, youth, and community leaders in shaping the future of the Niger Delta. The successful Niger Delta Stakeholders Summit held in July 2024 exemplifies this dedication, offering a platform for meaningful dialogue and the integration of diverse perspectives.”
