With one teacher already murdered in captivity and 39 young schoolchildren trapped deep in a massive national park, Oyo State is locked in a high-stakes standoff where the government must pull off a flawless rescue mission without yielding an inch to bandits.

Seyi Makinde, the state governor  has vowed that security forces will execute a delicate, zero-casualty rescue mission while firmly rejecting any negotiations with the kidnappers.

The governor’s resolute stance follows the devastating news that the abductors murdered Michael Oyedokun, one of the seven abducted teachers, while holding the group hostage.

The confirmation of the teacher’s death has significantly heightened the stakes of the month-long crisis, sparking immense public outrage and driving mass street protests across the state capital.

The administrative heart of Oyo State became the epicenter of public grief and anger on Tuesday as hundreds of demonstrators, led by prominent activist and social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), marched through the major arteries of Ibadan.

The protest culminated at the Government House, where citizens demanded immediate accountability and the swift return of the victims.

Addressing the crowd directly, governor Makinde emphasised the unprecedented and fragile nature of the crisis, noting that because the victims include nursery and primary school children who cannot protect or fend for themselves, the rescue efforts require a highly specialized, cautious approach to prevent further loss of life.

Despite the severe pressure and the tragic loss of  Oyedokun, Makinde drew a hard line against financial or political concessions.

He stated that while the criminal elements have attempted to open channels of communication, the state will not legitimise their actions through formal negotiations, arguing that doing so would fundamentally compromise government authority and amount to surrendering sovereignty to the bandits. Instead, the administration is focusing heavily on tactical intelligence.

The rescue operation faces immense geographic hurdles, as intelligence reports indicate that the remaining 39 pupils and six teachers are currently being held deep within the Old Oyo National Park.

The park poses significant operational challenges for security personnel, spanning approximately 2,500 square kilometers and cutting across parts of 10 different Local Government Areas.

This vast, rugged terrain severely limits rapid military movement, requiring highly coordinated, patient, and strategic tracking to avoid crossfire.

The crisis originally began on May 15, when gunmen launched a coordinated assault on three schools in the Oriire Local Government Area, and one month later, the state remained locked in a tense standoff to bring the survivors home safely.
