At least 30 people have been killed in a fatal road accident involving a trailer travelling towards Gujungu, Jigawa State, at Kwanar Barde in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Sunday and was attributed to reckless driving, according to preliminary reports. Several other victims sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment in hospitals across the state.

Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano State, described the incident as devastating and mourned the victims, calling the loss “heartbreaking” for both the affected families and the wider Kano community.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, the governor expressed condolences and offered prayers for the deceased.

“The fatal accident involved a trailer heading towards Gujungu, which reportedly crashed due to reckless driving, leading to the death of over 30 persons, while many others sustained serious injuries,” the statement said.

Yusuf prayed for the repose of the souls of the dead and asked God to grant their families the strength to cope with the loss. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

Beyond condolences, the governor issued immediate directives to state agencies. He instructed the Kano State Ministry of Health to ensure that all victims admitted to public hospitals receive free and adequate medical care without delay.

He also directed the Office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs to carry out an urgent assessment of the situation and roll out support for the families affected by the crash.

Warning against a repeat of such tragedies, Yusuf urged motorists — particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles — to obey traffic regulations and avoid dangerous driving practices.

Medical and humanitarian teams have since been deployed to assist the injured and provide relief to bereaved families, as authorities continue to respond to the aftermath of one of the deadliest road accidents in the area in recent times.
