Alex Otti, governor of Abia State, has charged comptrollers of Correctional Services to adequately care for inmates in their facilities.
Otti gave the charge while receiving, Ogbifun Josephine Ighiwiyisi and her delegation, who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House Umuahia.
Otti, represented by Caleb Ajagba, his Chief of Staff, said that the inmates should not be dehumanized as they were still human beings irrespective of their circumstances.
“Many of those people there may not necessarily be criminals or criminally minded, but circumstances may have forced them there.
“Irrespective of what might have taken them there, they are still human beings. Everyone that is detained is a human being and needs to be taken care of,” Otti stated.
The governor noted that he was committed to making sure that every Abian was taken care of and appreciated the Abia State Command of Correctional Services for the good works they were doing including taking care of the inmates.
The Abia governor, who said that he was building a new Abia, called on the new commander and her team to contribute their own quota in driving the new narrative in Abia and support in making sure that the state is crime-free.
He promised to continue to support the facilities and indeed various federal agencies in the state as much as funds might be available and encouraged them to always make judicious use of the resources available to them.
Igwiwiyisi, earlier in her speech, thanked the governor for his assistance to the Correctional Services in Abia State.
She particularly appreciated him for extending solar-powered light to the facilities, building the perimeter fencing, proper erosion control in their premises among others, while soliciting for the support of the state government in tackling some of their challenges.
