The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism, leading to the arrest of two suspects in Abia State.
The operation, carried out by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG SIS), aligns with the recent directive from the NSCDC Commandant General for a tougher stance against illegal dealings in petroleum products and economic sabotage.
In a statement signed by Babawale Afolabi, the National Public Relations Officer at NSCDC Headquarters in Abuja, the agency reaffirmed its commitment to tackling oil theft.
Appolos Dandaura, leader of the CG SIS, disclosed that the suspects—Jeremiah Ufok (28) and Saviour Patrick (22)—were caught siphoning crude oil from pipelines and refining it into Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) using makeshift cooking drums and pots.
According to NSCDC, the arrest took place in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, an area previously targeted by NSCDC.
“Despite earlier arrests of four individuals, illegal refining activities continued, prompting renewed efforts to dismantle the network”, the statement reads. Commending the public for providing credible intelligence, Dandaura assured that investigations were ongoing to track down the sponsors and accomplices still at large.
“We have briefed the Commandant General about the arrest, and he has given direct orders for a thorough investigation and further arrests,” Dandaura said.
According to him, the suspects were apprehended following a sustained intelligence tip-off about an illegal refining operation at Open River Camp in the Ukwa axis. Kegs filled with AGO and DPK were recovered from the crime scene.
Dandaura emphasized that the suspects would be prosecuted in a competent court, serving as a warning to others involved in oil theft.
The NSCDC has vowed to sustain its fight against pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, which continue to cost Nigeria millions of dollars in lost revenue.
