NIWA seeks Amnesty Programme’s support to secure inland waterways

Lokoja River Port near completion, to be operational soon

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has solicited the support of the Presidential Amnesty Programme to enhance security on the nation’s inland waterways.

According to a statement by Jibril Darda’u, general manager of Corporate Affairs of NIWA, George Moghalu, managing director of NIWA, solicited for the support when he paid a courtesy visit to Milland Dikio Dixon, Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme, in his office in Abuja recently.

“We are here to collaborate, synergise and look for areas of partnership with the Presidential Amnesty Programme in order to provide adequate security on NIWA facilities in the Niger-Delta Area and to also build confidence in stakeholders that Nigerian waterway is crime-free,” Moghalu said.

He said NIWA is engaging all the relevant security forces, such as police and Navy to beef up security on the waterways.

He however congratulated Dikio on his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari as the coordinator of the Amnesty Programme and also described it as a well-deserved.

Responding, Milland Dikio Dixon thanked the NIWA boss and promised that the Amnesty Programme was willing to meet with the Authority to look at areas of partnership that would help provide and create jobs for the Niger-Delta youths.

In another development, Vice Admiral I.I Ibrahim (Rtd), chairman, Board of Directors of the NIWA has pledged the Board’s full supports towards enabling the management team succeed.

Speaking at the NIWA 2020 end of the year get together and sent forth for all 2020 retired staff in Lokoja, the chairman, described NIWA as a family that must keep the flag flying.

He tasked staff on efficiency and dedication to their duties, adding that the board would strive to sustain and support the Management to achieve their goals.

On his part, Moghalu thanked the Board members for gracing the occasion. He disclosed that a new innovation has been introduced in recognising not only the retired General Managers, but also all retired staff that have served the Authority meritoriously.

Meanwhile, as part of the management’s effort to motivate staffs to put in their best performance in the development and growth of NIWA, awards and gifts were presented to the best performing Area office, and Hadeija Jammare Area office in Kano State, emerged as the best.

A plaque and N100,000 were given to the office in recognition of its outstanding performance in surpassing their revenue target in the year 2020 despite all odds.

While Ibrahim Onimisi of Lagos Area Office emerged as the best staff of the year 2020 and was awarded with a plaque and N50,000 in recognition of his outstanding performance.

Equally, all the six retired General Managers went home with Plasma Television set each, while other retired staff went with a plaque in appreciation to their meritorious services to the Authority.
