The Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE) has called for collaborative advocacy in the building industry to foster a sustainable and resilient ecosystem in the country.
Peter Osarodion Igbinijesu, President of NIStructE, made this call in Lagos ahead of the Institute’s annual conference and pre-annual general meeting held recently.
The conference had as theme, ‘Emerging Tasks for Structural Engineering Practice in Nigeria’ and was hinged on collaboration and advocacy.

“It is imperative that we stay ahead of emerging tasks and challenges, especially the embarrassment relating to building collapse and failed infrastructure,” the president said.
According to him, there is a need for sustainable design solutions as the industry is experiencing rapid advancements in technology, and changing environmental conditions.
“This conference serves as a platform for professionals in our field and the built environment to exchange knowledge, insights, and best practices in the ever-evolving domain of structural engineering.
“We will delve into the key areas that are shaping the future of our profession as structural engineers. We will explore topics in resilient infrastructure, innovative materials, advanced computation technologies, and sustainable design practices.”
The president said there would be conversations around effective regulation for structural engineering practice in Nigeria, emerging technology in structural engineering practice in Nigeria, and structural engineering of community infrastructure (using the Lagos metro system as a case study).
“The goal of this conference is to foster collaboration, inspire new ideas, and empower structural engineers to tackle the complex challenges we face today and in the years to come.

“By sharing our experiences and expertise, we can collectively contribute to the advancement of our profession and ensure the safety and resilience of our built environment.
“Together, let us embrace the emerging tasks for structural engineering practice in Nigeria and pave the way for our country’s sustainable and resilient future,” he added.
