The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has strengthened Nigeria’s engagement in global climate discussions following its participation in the 5th Conference of the Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS), held at the United Nations University headquarters in Tokyo.

According to a statement by the Agency, the conference, which took place from March 4 to 7, 2026, brought together policymakers, researchers, and international development experts to explore the role of technology in advancing multilateral cooperation for peace and sustainability.

Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, led the Nigerian delegation to the event, where the agency participated in high-level discussions on climate governance, environmental sustainability, and disaster resilience.

The conference opened with a welcome address by Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University and United Nations Under-Secretary-General. Keynote presentations were delivered by Måns Nilsson, Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute, and Rumiko Seya, President of Reach Alternatives.

During the conference, the NiMet delegation participated in a series of parallel sessions focusing on climate action, disaster resilience, migration, climate change mitigation, and sustainable peace and security. Discussions also explored sustainable agriculture and environmental sustainability on land and below water.

The NiMet team contributed to expert dialogues and reviews centred on climate governance, urban resilience, equitable climate justice, and transboundary resource management, as well as innovative approaches for monitoring and predicting environmental changes.

NiMet said its active engagement at the conference provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge with global stakeholders and strengthen partnerships aimed at advancing climate action and sustainable development.

According to the agency, the participation also helped to elevate Nigeria’s voice in international conversations on climate science and sustainability, while reinforcing its commitment to supporting evidence-based policies that address environmental challenges.
