A sculpture created by Nigerian metal artist Ekpenisi Steve Ucheka, known professionally as “The Iron Bender,” has been installed at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, marking one of the most prominent international placements of an African public artwork in recent years.
The piece, titled the Texan Golden Boots, was commissioned to mark the World Cup and now stands permanently within one of the United States’ most recognised sporting venues, which draws millions of visitors annually.
Ekpenisi, who hails from Abavo in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, began his career as a professional sculptor in 2008. In the years since, his work has featured in public installations across Nigeria and in international projects in Israel and Turkey. The Dallas commission, however, represents the most high-profile placement of his career to date.
The sculpture joins a growing number of works by African artists entering permanent collections and public spaces in North America and Europe, at a time when institutions are increasingly looking beyond traditional Western sources for artistic commissions.

For Ekpenisi, the project carries significance beyond personal achievement. Artists from Nigeria and across the continent have long produced works of international standing, yet opportunities to exhibit within major Western venues have remained limited. The Texan Golden Boots installation places his craft directly in front of a global audience, without mediation.
His body of work spans public monuments, cultural installations, and large-scale metal structures. His signature approach involves shaping metal into forms that carry cultural and historical meaning, a method that has earned him recognition across the industry as one of Africa’s leading contemporary sculptors.
Visitors to AT&T Stadium during World Cup events and beyond will encounter the boots as part of the stadium’s public art offering. The installation is seen within creative circles in Nigeria as a milestone, evidence that artists trained and working on the continent can secure commissions at the highest international level.
Ekpenisi has not indicated plans to relocate. He continues to work from Nigeria, where he trains and mentors emerging sculptors, many of whom cite his career as a reference point for what is possible without leaving the continent.
The Texan Golden Boots remain on display at AT&T Stadium, Dallas.
