Nigeria plunged into darkness as national grid collapses again

Nigerians are groaning again in darkness after the national electricity grid suffered a major failure on Wednesday, seizing power supply to homes amidst scorching weather conditions.

The situation is exposing companies, businesses, and individual users to economic difficulties, as many Nigerians question why the system continues to fail despite huge million dollars investments.

The grid, which is being managed by the government-owned Transmission Company of Nigeria, was said to have collapsed on Wednesday, according to Eko Electricity Distribution Company and Kaduna Electric who confirmed the incident.

“We regret to inform you that the power outage currently being experienced across our franchise- Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states- is as a result of the collapse of the national grid,” Kaduna Electric’s Head of Corporate Communication,  Abdulazeez Abdullahi said.

The electricity body also said that the power shall be restored soon.

“Power supply shall be restored across our franchise as soon as the grid is restored by the Transmission Company of Nigeria team,” Kaduna Electric tweeted.

Similarly, Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc, covering the base of corporate Nigeria in Lagos said to its customers via text message: “Dear customer, there is a partial system collapse on the national grid. Our TCN partners are working to restore supply immediately. Please bear with us.”

The spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, could not be immediately reached for comments on the development.

This is not the first time the national electricity grid will collapse as a similar incident was recorded in February 2021, months after a similar incident was recorded in November 2020.
