The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it has released N7.61 billion to nine Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) for payment to 4,237 retired officers.

Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of Customs, mentioned the disbursement during a dialogue with retirees held on July 14, saying the funds had already been transferred to the PFAs for onward payment into the beneficiaries’ individual accounts.

According to figures presented at the meeting, Premium Pension received funds for 2,268 retirees, while Access-ARM Pension Managers accounted for 1,223 beneficiaries. Leadway Pensions had 403 beneficiaries, TrustFund Pensions 156, FCMB Pensions 144, Veritas Glanvills Pensions 28, Norrenberger Pensions 11 and Fidelity Pension Managers four, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 4,237.

Adeniyi said the Customs Service remained committed to meeting its obligations to both serving and retired officers, stressing that the welfare of retirees was essential to the institution’s long-term strength.

“The Service must remain strong and financially capable of meeting its obligations to serving officers and retirees,” he said. “The welfare of those who dedicated decades to the Service cannot be separated from the future of the institution.”

The Customs boss also called for sustained engagement with retired personnel, saying the dialogue was convened to address concerns raised by retirees and curb misinformation surrounding pension administration.

“I acknowledge your concerns and suggestions, and it is in view of this that we called for this dialogue to promote better understanding and reduce the effect of rumours and unofficial information on the relationship between the Service and its retired personnel,” Adeniyi said.

Retirees appealed for the engagement to become a regular feature of Customs’ welfare programme.
