The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has commended the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) for notable progress in the conduct of the 2022-2023 Mini Bid Round and the 2024 Licensing Round.

According to NEITI’s independent observation and monitoring report, the licensing rounds demonstrated “notable improvements in inclusivity, digitalisation, and procedural integrity.”

The report highlighted key elements of the report to include Inclusivity, Transparency and Digitalisation: The use of digital platforms improved the efficiency and transparency of the process. The report also identified areas for improvement, including: Evaluation methodology, Result disclosure, Beneficial ownership and Energy Transition and Climate Accountability Framework.

In addition to commending NUPRC, NEITI unveiled a comprehensive Energy Transition and Climate Accountability Framework. The framework aims to track greenhouse gas emissions, monitor divestments, and promote a just transition

NEITI outlined key implementation steps for the framework, including Oil, gas, and solid minerals reporting, Stakeholder engagement, Institutional coordination and Bi-annual performance reviews

The framework is expected to position Nigeria at the forefront of climate-compliant resource governance and ensure transparency and accountability in the extractive sector.
