Agnes Asagbra, the Director-General of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), has emphasized the importance of safely utilizing modern biotechnology to promote environmental sustainability.
Asagbra stated this during a two-day workshop on Biosafety Communications, organized for NBMA officers and stakeholders in collaboration with the Programme for Biosafety Systems (PBS) on Tuesday in Abuja. According to her, “Ensuring the safe use of modern biotechnology is essential for protecting our environment, health and biodiversity”.
Asagbra stated that the workshop’s objective was both timely and vital for addressing the complexities of modern biotechnology and its regulation. He emphasized that biosafety remains a fundamental aspect of NBMA’s mandate.
“This workshop aims to provide us with the tools and strategies to enhance the communication of biosafety regulations effectively,” he said.
“We will delve into key areas, including combating misinformation, engaging stakeholders, and learning from Kenya’s experience in biosafety communications, among other insightful topics.”
“Effective communication is essential to achieving this objective. Through clear, transparent, and engaging dialogue, we can foster public trust, keep stakeholders informed, and support informed decision-making,” she stated.
In her remarks, Chinyere Nzeduru, Programme Assistant at PBS, praised NBMA for organizing the workshop and pledged the programme’s continued support for NBMA’s mandate.
