NAF investigates civilian casualties in Zamfara airstrikes

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation into reports of civilian casualties following recent airstrikes in Tungar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The operation, which targeted a bandit stronghold, resulted in the elimination of several bandits and the rescue of kidnap victims.

In a statement on Monday by Olusola Akinboyewa, director of public relations and information, NAF expressed concern over reports of civilian casualties during the airstrike. It emphasised that the force prioritises the safety and well-being of every Nigerian and considers the loss of civilian lives a grave issue.

“A comprehensive investigation is in progress to ascertain the veracity of the reports, the outcome of which will be duly communicated to inform and reassure the public,” the NAF said.

The air force reaffirmed its commitment to combating banditry and restoring peace in the north-west while ensuring that civilian lives and infrastructure are protected.

“We will work closely with all relevant authorities to uncover the facts and take appropriate steps as part of our unwavering commitment to preventing, minimising, and mitigating harm to civilians during our operations.

“This latest strike is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to restore security to Zamfara State and other areas plagued by banditry”, it added.
