Misconduct: 2 senior police officers dismissed, face prosecution

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal and prosecution of two assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) over gross misconduct.

Ikechukwu Ani, head of press and public relations PSC, confirmed the dismissal on Monday in Abuja.

Ani said the commission also approved the reduction in ranks of two superintendents of police (SPs) to deputy superintendents (DSP), one DSP to assistant superintendent (ASPs) and three ASPs to inspectors.

The PSC spokesman said the decisions were high points of the concluding stages of the commission’s 2nd plenary meeting in Abuja.

He said the commission also approved a punishment of severe reprimand on ten senior police officers found guilty of unauthorised disclosure of official secrets, dishonesty, sabotage and conduct unbecoming of senior officers.

According to him, another nine senior officers were given a punishment of reprimand, while a deputy commissioner of police was found not guilty and exonerated and a letter of warning was served on one ASP.

He said the commission earlier treated recommendations on police promotions and promoted some senior officers, including 11 commissioners of police (CPs) to the next rank of assistant inspectors general of police (AIGs).

Ani said others promoted were 16 deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) to CPs, 21 ACPs to DCPs, 57 chief superintendents of police (CSPs) to ACPs, 1,348 SPs to CSPs and 876 DSPs to SPs.

He said the chairman of the commission, Hashimu Argungu, pledged the commitment of the commission to ensure discipline among officers of the Nigeria Police Force to effectively carry out their constitutional responsibility.
