The Joint Task Force of Operation Hadin Kai has imposed a ban on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, across Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states due to heightened security concerns.
The directive, issued by U.U. Idris, Air Component Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Air Commodore, highlights the threat posed by unauthorized drone operations in the region.
Idris noted that government agencies and private individuals frequently operate drones without proper authorization, raising serious safety and security concerns.
“The proliferation of drones for domestic and commercial purposes has led to serious security concerns. These concerns mainly stem from their possible use by non-state actors and criminal elements for subversive and offensive activities,” the directive stated.
It further warned that non-state actors have increasingly employed drones to target military assets and critical national infrastructure, as seen in other parts of the world.
“Recent incidents, including the interception of a passenger carrying a drone onboard a non-governmental organization (NGO) flight from Maiduguri to Monguno on January 7, 2025, underscore the growing risks.
“The confiscated drone, now under investigation, is one of several cases that have highlighted the dangers of unregulated drone operations. “These incidents reveal trends by individuals to operate drones without due regard to safety and security, with detrimental consequences,” the statement read.
Idris emphasized that the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai is responsible for monitoring and regulating all aerial platforms, including drones, in the North-East region. This regulation, he said, aims to ensure the safety of all airspace users in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.
He reiterated the ban on drone operations in the region, stressing that any violations would be treated with utmost seriousness. “Breaches of this restriction, no matter how insignificant, will be viewed very seriously,” the directive stated.
The public and all stakeholders have been urged to strictly adhere to the ban to prevent potential threats to national security and public safety.
