Mojisola Meranda, has emerged the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
This follows the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa who has been the speaker of the House since 2015, when he was elected.
Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, has been been in the Lagos House of Assembly for the past three consecutive legislatures, which include the 8th, 9th and the current10th Assembly.
She was immediately elected the new Speaker by members of the House of Assembly after the impeachment of Obasa on Monday in plenary in a surprise turn of event.
Meranda, a Lagos indigene, was the chief whip of the ninth house. Before her time in the House, Meranda served the Apapa local government in different capacities. She also worked in the private sector.

She is one of only four women in the 40-member 10th assembly.
Obasa, who represents Agege state constituency 1, wa first elected in 2007, and has been reelected four times in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023.
However, in recent years he has not enjoyed a cordial working relationship with the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Sanwo-Olu. There are also reports that he is nursing gubernatorial ambition to replace the incumbent in 2027.
