Something must be very wrong in the educational system of Nigeria such that there are some local council areas whose public schools cannot produce a medical or engineering student to the university for medicine, engineering, maybe even in law.
Even if a student cheats his/her way through the joint admissions board examination, such a student will not scale through the post-UTME where students are under close watch. Result; nobody gains admission from public schools.
This was brought to the fore in Tai local council area of Rivers State when the Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government Affairs continued its oversight function in the local councils of the state. The Tai LGA chairman unveiled plans for education in the area, and pointed to a secret pain.
The RSHA visit is said to be to asses and evaluate developmental projects executed by council chairmen. The chairman of Tai, Matthew NenuBari Dike, unveiled his achievements within his 100 days in office.
Also unveiled were ongoing human capital development programmes and infrastructure.
Dike stated that in the area of Education, that when they came on board in October 2024, they observed that most of the schools lacked teachers. He said they quickly intervened by recruiting 250 teachers to beef up the manpower necessary for sound academic foundation. He did not say how many teachers were needed before supplying 250.
He added that plans were on the way to get more corps members posted to the area so as to properly address the issue of inadequate manpower in the Local Government Area.
The chairman said some science teachers were also recruited. This was when he expressed displeasure that for the past five years no student from Tai had gained admission into any university to study Engineering or Medicine due to lack of science teachers and science equipment.
“We discovered that they needed special attention, so that the Local Government Area is able to produce medical doctors, scientists as well as engineers through the Tai Science School with the purchase of books and other learning materials to enhance teaching and learning.
“A modern laboratory and six classrooms building are ongoing where we will give these children career guidance among other things. We are also planning to buy more instructional materials,” Dike added.
