Public sector workers in Lagos State can to receiving the new minimum wage of N30,000 for the least worker, as the state government has approved its implementation with effect from November 1, 2019.
With this, Lagos becomes one of the first states in the country to commence the implementation of the new wage, which took the Federal Government and organised labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) over one year to negotiated.
President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new wage bill into law in April 2019, thus making it binding on states and organised private sector not to pay below N30,000 to the least of worker in their employ.
In a statement signed by Hakeem Muri-Okunola, the head of service, Lagos, the state government explained that the November salaries were being delayed in order to adequately process and accommodate the new wage.
Muri-Okunola, in the statement, however, said that the approved minimum wage and consequential adjustments “are more than the Federal Government’s approved recommendation.”
The state government urged the public servants to show more commitment, dedication and selflessness in the delivery of qualitative service to the citizens of Lagos.
With the approval, workers on grade 07 will enjoy 30 percent increase; level 08 to 10 will 25 percent increase; 12 to 14 will get 22.5 percent increase while level 15-17 will enjoy 20 percent increase.
