Lagos Assembly firms up data protection bill

Assembly passes 2024 appropriation bill of N199.9 into law in Nasarawa

The Lagos State House of Assembly is poised to ensure an advanced regulatory framework for the protection of personal data in the state.

The Chairman House Committee on Science and Technology Olanrewaju Afinni, while presenting a report on the Lagos State Data Protection Bill 2021, highlighted basic clauses that deal with the technicalities inherent in it.

Afinni read out the recommendations in the report, which decisively dealt with words like data subject, Controller who authorize the data processing, giving consent especially when the public’s interest is involved and more.

Some of the lawmakers at plenary deliberated on some of the clauses in the bill that needed some amendment, after which it was adopted as the resolution of the house.

The stakeholder’s public hearing was held in November, 2021 to seek experts’ input on ‘A Bill for a Law to promote the protection of personal information processed by public and private bodies, establish minimum requirements for the processing and protection of personal information, establish the data protection commission and for Connected purposes.

The plenary was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni and later adjourned till Tuesday 12th of July,2022.
