Lagos, Abuja among Africa’s 10 least expensive cities for international workers in 2024

Lagos, Abuja among Africa’s 10 least expensive cities for international workers in 2024

The cost of living for international workers in Africa’s cities remains a key factor for businesses and expatriates.

These cities combine low costs, cultural richness, and modern amenities, making them attractive for expatriates seeking either vibrant urban experiences or serene natural settings, thereby enhancing their overall quality of life.

According to Mercer’s Cost of Living City annual data report, factors such as inflation, exchange-rate fluctuations, economic and geopolitical volatility, local conflicts, and emergencies have led to increased expenses in housing, utilities, local taxes, and education, directly impacting the pay and savings of internationally mobile employees.

The report highlighted “Between 2023 and 2024, the most significant decreases in cost of living rankings were seen in cities in Africa (Lagos, Luanda and Abuja), South America (Santiago) and Eastern Asia (Osaka).”

Further stated in the report is the observation that while inflation rates soared above 20% in countries like Nigeria and Angola between March 2023 and March 2024, currency devaluations and reductions in high-end housing costs, such as those seen in Santiago, have effectively countered these inflationary pressures.

This has resulted in a notable decrease in the cost of living for international assignees in these regions, despite the challenging economic conditions.
