Lady who alleged kidnap on Twitter apologises

Ameerah Sufyan, the lady who raised an alarm about her alleged kidnap on Twitter last Tuesday has tendered an apology for faking the incident.

But the apology has elicited mixed reactions: while some condemned her for misleading Nigerians, others believe she may have been forced to tender the apology by the police.

Ameerah had alleged on Twitter that she and other 16 others, including three pregnant women were abducted at gunpoint from different parts of Abuja by men in police uniforms and a van.

“Please whoever has my WhatsApp number I sent a broadcast message of my location, we were abducted at gunpoint by ppl with police uniforms and a van from our houses from different parts of Abuja, we’re 17 including 3 pregnant women and two little kids, they didn’t see my phone,” she had tweeted.

But, in another tweet on Monday @Ameerah_sufyan wrote,” Good day all, I would like to formally apologise to the general public, to the whole police department and my friends and family for misleading them with the earlier tweet. Nothing of such happened and it was all just my delusions and negative thinking, I would also like to thank the IG and the CP Babaji Sunday for helping me through this, may God reward them abundantly.

“I intentionally took myself out of our house, went to these locations, entered bushes and dehydrated and starved myself for four days just like that, there was no kidnapping, nothing at all, I truly apologise and please pray for me,

I need it.

Some twitter users express concern that she may not be safe. “This isn’t Ameerah. The @PoliceNG needs to update us and investigate this again. Ameerah was iPhone user! RT & report”, @AM-Saleeem wrote explaining that the first tweet came from an iPhone while the ‘apology’ tweet came from an android phone.

“Her account is logged in on another phone which only happens when you’re forced to do so,”@ mc-blaqquie tweeted.

“Either the Nigeria Police is deceiving us by tweeting with her phone or them rescue them and threaten her to play along with them not to spoil their name,” peacezogallery wrote.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command last week announced that it found Ameerah and she is in custody. The police also debunked the alleged kidnap but said investigations will continue and findings will be communicated.

A statement from the command had read, “The Police Command wishes to categorically debunk the viral news of the alleged kidnapping of one Safiyanu Amira and seventeen (17) others who were reportedly abducted at gunpoint by armed men in police uniform on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at about 1:00 pm and to state that Safiyanu Amira is currently safe in police custody.

“While she is currently in the hospital receiving medical attention as demanded by global best practices, the investigation continues and findings will be communicated subsequently”.
