ICAN commits to development of professionals

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) says it is out to develop a generation of young and growing professionals that would leverage the opportunities in the ‘new normal’ to support economic growth.

According to ICAN, the unfolding new world is filled with windows of opportunities for all inductees, who are ready to apply themselves to productively utilise the opportunities.

Onome Adewuyi, president of ICAN said the disruptions triggered by the Covid- 19 pandemic have heightened the rapid transition from the former way of conducting businesses to a contactless world.

Speaking at the 53rd induction of Association of Accounting Technicians West Africa ( AATWA) in Lagos, Adewuyi said with technology, the horizon of professionals has been expanded, as they now have the entire world as their job market.

She observed that the geographical barriers that formally limited most professionals have almost been completely removed for anyone who has the requisite knowledge, skills and attitude to compete in the global space.

Abdul- Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi, past president of ICAN in his keynote speech at the event, observed that to become an outstanding accounting technician and chartered accountant, young professionals must strive to be trusted, respected and needed.

Owoyemi in his paper titled, “from youth to legend: a pathway for the young professionals,” said given the country’s challenging environment, young professionals may often wonder whether they could ever become successful, adding that there is need for them to be persistent if they want to make it.

He argued that success was attainable not only because of our country’s ever-expanding population, but because there was market demand for goods and services and an exponential rise in the world-wide economy through the impact of the internet.
