GodsWill Akpabio, the Senate President, has revealed that he sent emissaries to check on elder statesman, Edwin Clark, just a week before his passing, unaware that it would be their last contact.
Akpabio made this known in a condolence message, where he expressed deep sorrow over the death of the nationalist and Niger Delta leader.
He described Clark’s demise as a great loss to Nigeria, the Niger Delta, and all who value justice, unity, and national progress.
He highlighted Clark’s remarkable contributions to the country, noting that at 97, he was a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Pa Edwin Clark, a statesman, nationalist, and Ijaw leader. His dedication to Nigeria’s unity and development will remain evergreen. We have lost not just a leader, but a true patriot and champion of justice,” Akpabio said.
He added, “At 97, Clark was a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. From his early days as a councillor to his role as a federal minister and later as a trusted adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, he remained a strong moral voice in governance.
“A relentless advocate for the Niger Delta, Clark championed equity, resource control, and the rights of the oppressed. He was known for speaking truth to power, undeterred by political convenience.”
