LEBECHI Mbam, the Commissioner for Works in Ebonyi State, has offered scholarships to 30 underprivileged undergraduates studying at various Universities across the Country through his MSL Foundation, which has been on the forefront of fighting illiteracy in the State.
During the flag-off event if the scholarship scheme held in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, each beneficiary received a cheque of N120,000.
He described education as the key to success and encouraged the scholarship recipients to use the opportunity for a better future.
“The society is becoming increasingly challenging. When I consider the difficulties we face in raising our children, I feel motivated to act because my community lacks education. The only way we can help our world and fulfill our purpose on Earth, as God intended, is to represent Him as ambassadors of Christ.
“By doing so, we are called to love our brothers and sisters. It is this love that drives us to support the indigenous people of Abakaliki, especially the youth. The youth are our future, and we must lay a solid foundation for them.
“This is the foundation we are establishing now because I know that education is essential for everything we do. By extending our resources and love to the youth, we can create a positive impact in their lives. Having experienced personal challenges during my academic journey, including the loss of my father while I was still in school, I understand the value of support. I didn’t have this benefit, but through God’s grace, I persevered.
“I felt it was necessary to reach out to those less privileged, who are eager to pursue their education but lack the funds for tuition fees. This is our mission.”
Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, the Wife of the State Governor; Mbam Ogodo, the Chairman of the scholarship foundation; Ben Odo, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice; and Ebere Nwogba, the Chairman of Abakaliki local government, all commended Mbam for his scholarship initiative.
They noted that the programme would help reduce illiteracy in the Abakaliki local government area, urging the beneficiaries to take full advantage of this opportunity.
Nwifuru, represented by Nkechiynyere Echiegu, the Wife of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, issued a warning that any beneficiaries who neglect their studies would be removed from the scholarship programme.
She expressed concern over the low literacy rates in Abakaliki and expressed hope that the scholarship would help improve the situation.
John Okechukwu, a medical student who was unable to pay his 3rd-year fees among other beneficiaries who are facing tuition fees challenges, thanked the Commissioner for his support.
