Five-storey DMGS, Onitsha building collapses

A five-storey building under construction at the Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha, Anambra state has collapsed.

It was gathered that the building being constructed by the Anglican School had reached the finishing stages when it collapsed at about 7.15 am on Wednesday.

Although no life was lost in the incident, a source in the school, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent that the school had committed a huge amount of money to erect the structure.

The source said the building started caving in from the last floor until it came down to the rubbles.

He added that the failed structure did not pose any danger as the students’ hostel was far from the building site which saved the situation.

Venerable Chigozie Anieto, Principal of the school said that he couldn’t dictate the cause of the collapse because best engineer and contractor for the construction.

“We made sure that everything both materials were in right places,” he said.

It is a pity that the building at DMGS which construction commenced about two years ago collapsed this morning. The number of death or injuries are not confirmed yet.

The gigantic five-storey building was initiated by the international old boys association of the school to celebrate the centenary(100th anniversary) of the school coming soonest.
