The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against travelling out of the country without valid travel documents, stressing that the practice is illegal and exposes citizens to exploitation, arrest and other security risks.
In a public advisory issued on Monday, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) said any attempt to leave Nigeria through unauthorised border routes or bypass official immigration procedures violates existing laws and could attract severe consequences. The warning comes amid growing concerns over irregular migration, human trafficking and cross-border crimes involving undocumented travellers.
AS Akinlabi, DCI Public Relations Officer of the NIS, disclosed the warning in a statement posted on the agency’s official X handle, urging Nigerians to comply with legal travel requirements at all times. According to him, individuals travelling without valid passports, visas, or other approved identification documents risk detention, deportation and possible prosecution by both Nigerian authorities and foreign governments.
The immigration agency noted that illegal migration channels often expose travellers to dangerous conditions, including human trafficking networks, extortion, exploitation and physical harm. It added that many undocumented migrants also face difficulties accessing legal protection, employment opportunities and basic services abroad because of their irregular status.
The Service further warned that the use of illegal routes undermines national security efforts and weakens border control mechanisms put in place to monitor movement across Nigeria’s land, air and sea borders. It maintained that all outbound and inbound travellers are expected to present valid and verifiable travel documents at approved entry and exit points.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service advises members of the public to avoid illegal routes and ensure they possess valid travel documents before embarking on international journeys,” the statement said.
The Federal Government has, in recent years, intensified efforts to curb irregular migration and strengthen border management amid rising cases of human smuggling and undocumented movement across West Africa. Authorities have repeatedly urged citizens seeking opportunities abroad to follow legal migration pathways and verify travel requirements before departure.
The NIS also encouraged Nigerians to report suspicious migration activities and individuals facilitating illegal border crossings to security agencies. It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders while ensuring lawful migration in line with international standards and national regulations.
The agency advised prospective travellers to visit immigration offices or official government platforms for accurate information regarding passport applications, visa requirements and approved travel procedures.
