Babalele Abdullahi, the detained son-in-law of Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been freed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC’s Acting Spokesman, Tony Orilade, told BusinessDay that Babalele was released on Tuesday after the anti-graft agency allegedly invited Tanimu Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) leading the defense team of Atiku to sign a bail document for him.
The Commission had slammed a €150 million money laundering allegation on Babalele, stressing that he intended to use the hard currency to unduly influence the outcome of many polls taking place in the country.
The PDP had vehemently protested the arrest saying that it was not justified. Atiku had also alleged persecution of family and associates over his intention to challenge the results of the presidential election which declared President Muhammadu Buhari as the winner, adding that no form of intimidation or harrasment would deter him from challenging the results in court.
Tony Orilade told BusinessDay further that Babalele would face prosecution after investigation, adding that the details of the allegations against him would be made public soon.
