EdoJobs commences recruitment of Uber riders as state charges youths to explore opportunity

Obaseki
As a testament to the booming investment climate in Benin City, the Edo State capital, global ride-sharing service, Uber has commenced recruitment of riders on its platform in Benin City, with the Edo State Skills Development Agency (EdoJobs) driving the process.
In a statement, Crusoe Osagie, special adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, said the coming of Uber to Benin was another testimony to the governor’s drive to open the state up for more investments.
Recall that the management of Uber in Nigeria paid a recent visit to state governor, Godwin Obaseki, some weeks ago, where modalities for the kick-off of the service in Benin City, was finalised.
Osagie said, “The service would soon commence operations in Benin City. We see this as another means for youths in the state to get engaged in a worthy business venture. This will open up space for more young people to get busy and leverage the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the economy.
“EdoJobs is working with the Uber team in marketing and other logistics for the full rollout of their services in Benin City. We see this as another opportunity for the private sector to work towards achieving the governor’s promise of creating 200,000 jobs in the state.”
He charged young people with the necessary skills to take advantage of the Uber service to earn a decent income, noting that the state government’s urban renewal efforts through massive infrastructural development will ensure a favourable business environment for those who invest in the ride-sharing service in the state.
Recall that Uber’s rival, Taxify commenced operations in Benin City in December last year, opening the space for global players in the ride-sharing scene to exploit the investment opportunities being created by the Governor Obaseki-led administration in the state.
In a related development, the EdoJobs in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH’s Skills Development for Youth Employment in Nigeria (SKYE) programme has commenced training for 100 youths in Computer Aided Design (CAD).
The CAD training is focused on Architecture, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Interior Design and Project Management.
CEO, Riverbank Technologies and Engineering Services Limited, Ayoola Jolayemi, said the training for youths would help in addressing unemployment in Edo State.
He noted that at the end of the training, participants would have the chance to become self-employed, employ other persons and contribute to wealth creation in the state.
He said the first phase of the training which is scheduled to last for a month, would be for 100 persons, with 20 participants each to be trained on Architectural CAD, Mechanical CAD, Electrical CAD, Interior Design and project management.
Jolayemi urged the trainees to be focused and determined, adding that the programme offers them the opportunity to be gainfully employed.
He added that the training on Architectural CAD, Mechanical CAD, Electrical and Interior Design would focus on 2-dimensional designs before the participants will then move on to the use of 3D auto-CAD.
He explained that at the end of the programme, examinations will be conducted for the participants (70% practical and 30% theory).
Jolayemi expressed appreciation to the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, GIZ and EdoJobs for providing the opportunity for youths to learn in-demand skills in the state.
A consultant with Edojobs on skills development and entrepreneurship, Olaniyi Omole, said the programme was robust and would link the participants to various high-profile companies where their services are needed for employment.
He noted that EdoJobs was not only focused on training but also engaging with a number of high-profile companies in the state where the trainees will be matched for employment at the completion of their training.
One of the trainees, Irabor Naomi Princess, a graduate of Madonna University, Okija, who enrolled for the Electrical CAD programme, expressed appreciation to the state government for the opportunity, adding that she was excited to be among those benefiting from the SKYE programme.
