Delta recovers N20m backlog of tax, penalties from eight firms

Corporate taxes record surprise jump in Q3

Following courts’ judgment, Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, Tuesday, recovered N20 million backlogs of tax and penalties from companies within Warri and Efurun axis of the state.
The executive chairman of the board, Monday Onyeme, made the disclosure while rounding off an enforcement exercise in Effurun/Warri axis of the state.

Onyeme spoke through his representative, the chief inspector of taxes in the Department of Enforcement and Compliance, Christopher Edhughoro.
“The enforcement body accompanied by a team of policemen, court bailiffs and members of staff of the revenue board to enforce judgment of the Effurun and Warri Revenue Courts recovered over N20 million back log of taxes and penalties imposed by the courts,” he said.
The chairman said the recovery was the outcome the failure of defaulters to file annual income tax between 2010 and 2015, contrary to section 81(1) of the Personal Income Tax Act 2011 (As Amended) and punishable under section 81(3) of the Personal Income Tax Act 2011 (as amended).

The companies affected by the judgment included: Law Union and Rock Insurance, Effurun, with a judgment sum of over N16.5million; Yemotech Nigeria Limited, Ben Mike Construction Company Limited, and Saabhuxton Nigeria Limited.
Others were Prime Source Limited; Lutoyo International Limited, Jaform Nigeria Limited and Monina Enterprises, all situated within the jurisdiction of the Warri Revenue Court and with judgment sums of N600,000 each, except Monina Enterprises whose tax liability amounted to N100,000 only.

He reiterated the resolve of the state government to continue to enforce relevant tax laws against defaulters in a bid to increase compliance and shore up the internally generated revenue profile of the state government.
He urged those who were yet to meet their tax obligations to do so without delay to avoid the embarrassment of having their business premises sealed-up.
He also urged members of the public to ensure that their taxes were promptly paid, stressing that the enforcement exercise would be a continuous one.
