The Chief of Defence Staff has intensified the push to update Nigeria’s guiding military doctrine as part of efforts to strengthen the Armed Forces’ ability to counter terrorists and other evolving national security threats.

The Committee on Review of the Joint Defence Doctrine 2017 (JDD), in line with this move, paid a consultative visit to the Headquarters 6 Division Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt Barracks, Rivers State, on Tuesday, to obtain inputs for incorporation into the 2026 Joint Defence Doctrine.

Ademola Adedoja, Major General and Chairman of the Committee, said during the visit that the Joint Defence Doctrine Review Committee was established in 2017 to periodically review the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s guiding doctrinal document.

He said Olufemi Oluyede, General and the Chief of Defence Staff, had directed the current review to ensure the doctrine remains relevant to contemporary operational demands.

Adedoja said the review sought to align the doctrine with prevailing security realities across all theatres of operation through extensive consultations with formations and stakeholders.

He added that although the doctrine ought to have undergone periodic reviews, attempts to update it in 2022 and 2025 were not concluded.

Adedoja said the Committee therefore commenced the current review in the first week of June 2026, focusing on critical areas such as logistics, command and control, technology, emerging threats, future warfare and inter-agency cooperation.

He stressed that meaningful consultations were essential, adding that the committee was committed to producing an inclusive document informed by practical operational experiences.

Adedoja encouraged commanders and staff officers of 6 Division Nigerian Army, as well as affiliated formations and units, to make candid and constructive contributions, assuring them that every submission would receive due consideration.

Emmanuel Emekah, Major General and the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army, who was represented by Emmanuel Adamu, Brigadier General and Chief of Staff, Headquarters 6 Division, reaffirmed the division’s commitment to supporting the review process by providing valuable operational insights that would enrich the 2026 Joint Defence Doctrine.

Umar Adam, Lieutenant Colonel and Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Nigerian Army Public Relations, said in a release that the committee’s visit featured an interactive session during which senior officers made observations and recommendations on key doctrinal issues.
