Covenant, UI, FUTA Nigeria’s best universities – Times Higher Education

Times Higher Education (THE) has announced Covenant University, the University of Ibadan, and the Federal University of Technology, Akure as Nigeria’s best tertiary institutions in its World University rankings for 2024, encompassing 1,904 universities from 108 countries.

According to Times Higher Education, “The ranking table was constructed based on the newly introduced WUR 3.0 methodology, which meticulously assesses an institution’s performance in five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.”

A breakdown of the ranking showed that Covenant University is placed within the global 801-1000 range, which is among the best 1,000 universities in the world, and the best-ranked tertiary institution from Nigeria on the table.

Covenant University, a privately owned institution, stands at the top spot in Nigeria. At the same time, the University of Ibadan followed in second, while FUTA was third and the University of Lagos was fourth in the ranking order.

Other Nigerian universities that achieved the top ranking include the University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Afe Babalola University, University of Benin, and Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Lagos State University (LASU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Port Harcourt.

The University of Oxford tops the global ranking for the eighth year in a row, but others in the top five have seen shifts in their ranks. Stanford University moves up to second place, pushing Harvard University down to fourth. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) climbed up two places to third this year.
